About the Country
Located east of Zambia and west and north of Mozambique in East Africa’s Great Lakes region, Malawi is home to more than 21 million people. According to the CIA World Factbook, Malawi is one of the world’s lowest-income countries, with 70% of Malawians living below the international poverty line.
Like many of its east African neighbors, Malawi’s population is surging, with a median age of 17 years old and a population increase of 2.2% over the last year. Increasing population density presents a challenge for a country where nearly 80% of the population works in agriculture, while climate extremes, inflation, and fuel shortages contribute to widespread and rising food insecurity.
Program Overview
Launching in March 2025, Five Talents’ Malawi program is based in the southeast region of the country, the region most impacted by food insecurity. Our Malawi church program partner is eager to launch Savings Groups for their communities and believe this ministry can reach and transform the lives of the most marginalized and vulnerable in their struggling region.
