Democratic Republic of the Congo

About the Country

The need in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is immense. Despite an abundance of natural resources and over $24 trillion in mineral wealth, many residents live below the poverty line, and more than seven million residents are internally displaced as a result of ongoing conflict. Rates of infant and maternal mortality are high, and within the country’s population of 115 million, the literacy rate is approximately 77%.

Program Overview

Five Talents launched its DRC program in 2018 in Aru, in the northeast part of the country. Groups begin with literacy and numeracy training, then graduate to saving and business training. As of 2024, more than 1400 participants are in the literacy stage and another 800 have formed Savings Groups. We are continuing to mobilize community leaders to support the Aru program and have expanded our training offerings to include trauma healing and sexual and gender-based violence prevention.
