Rwanda experienced robust economic performance over the decade leading up to 2018. However, many communities have yet to recover economically from the COVID-19 pandemic, which worsened inequality and increased food insecurity, affecting vulnerable populations disproportionately. Most affected are female-headed households, with almost 90% working in agriculture compared with 62% of male-headed households. Overall, there are almost one million more female small-scale farm workers than male in Rwanda.
Begun in 2022, Five Talents’ Rwanda program focuses on female-headed households with children at risk of malnutrition or dropping out of school. Through skills development training and community Savings Groups, the program aims to empower women to shift from subsistence farming to agribusiness to improve financial stability and address malnutrition.
Alongside literacy, numeracy, and business skills training, the program provides practical advice on nutrition, meal planning, and healthy cooking. Members learn agricultural techniques developed by a local agronomist and cultivate crops together on a joint plot of land, sharing the harvest both for their own household use and to sell at the market.
Over the years, we’ve discovered a wealth of treasure in the Parable of the Talents. That’s why we’ve prepared this free guide to Matthew 25, featuring reflections from pastors and Christian leaders.
