Sewing and Saving: An Empowered Entrepreneur

Myanmar entrepreneur grows her sewing business as a result of village savings.

A Testimony from Myanmar

After joining a savings group and learning how to save, Naw Moo began lessons on how to build a better business. As a result she's been able to strengthen and grow her sewing business.

The Power of Village Savings

Naw Moo lives in a remote village near the border between Myanmar and Thailand, where she has found great community in her savings group. When she needs to replenish her materials for her tailoring orders, she now can borrow from her savings group, rather than go to a money lender who charges high interest. Her business is important in her village. People can come to her to have a new shirt made, instead of spending money on transport to go to a bigger town with more services. Naw Moo shares that learning how to save has changed the way she can contribute in other ways within her community.

Community Health and Development

She is grateful that she now has enough income that she can help others who are in need, including making sure her elderly parents get nutritious food. She now can contribute by providing snacks for children at the local pre-school that her church runs. Naw Moo says that she knows she’s been able to increase her income because now she can tithe exactly from her income, as well as meet her personal needs, and even have enough to buy material to make herself new clothes. Through this program, Naw Moo has gained trust through her savings group and she's realized that she has good math skills - she's now serving as the accountant for her group. Before she didn’t have much fellowship, but now has made new friendships with other women in her group. "We talk about issues that we are facing in our families, and share about how saving is helping us in our lives."
