A Mother's Day Reflection

This past February I had the privilege of traveling to Myanmar to visit some of our Five Talents programs. In the context of the coronavirus, that visit feels like years ago rather than just a few months. The new reality of living through a pandemic lockdown, however, has made me appreciate my experiences in Myanmar in a new light—as a mom.

Part of my time in Myanmar was spent meeting and interviewing people that participate in our savings and loan groups. Some interviews were inspiring, some were heartbreaking, but all had a common thread in response to the one question I asked every participant: What is your dream?

Seeking a Better Life

Without fail, every time I asked this question a consistent answer emerged: I want to give my family a better life. It may have been worded differently, in the form of being able to afford school, a sturdier house, food on the table. But the sentiment was the same—caring for those you love most in the world.

Admittedly, as a mom of three grade schoolers, some days under the coronavirus lockdown have been tiring and stressful. But I am grateful for the reminder that times of crisis seem to elevate the things that are most important. Much like our clients in Myanmar, what has been elevated in my life is the desire to care for those I love the most.

Helping Moms Achieve their Dreams

Five Talents seeks to empower men and women living in severe poverty in the most fragile regions in the world. Eighty percent of our clients are women, many of whom have been widowed by violent conflicts and now struggle to provide the most basic care for their children. It’s difficult to fathom this reality, as the hardship I struggle with now is getting my kids enough internet bandwidth to attend on-line class. Yet despite this chasm of disparity, the common desire remains—to care for those we love and dream for a better life them. This is a universal tenet of every mother’s heart.

This Mother’s Day I have renewed gratitude for the health and welfare of my family. I am grateful for the ministry of Five Talents. And I am grateful to you, our generous partners, for caring about the suffering of others. Thank you for helping moms around the world make their dreams for their children come true.

Wishing you a joy-filled Mother’s Day!
