How I Became Famous: A Story from South Sudan

From Humble Beginnings

Gwen hasn’t always been famous. She was often overlooked. Selling charcoal on the side of the road wasn’t glamorous and it didn’t bring much income. Gwen and her family struggled to meet their most basic needs. “Before joining the program I was always asking for money”, she says.

With Five Talents training, Gwen learned to save and plan her business. She also learned how to talk to customers and ensure that she gives them the best product she can.

Gwen enjoys a meal with members of her savings group. After eating, they collect their savings and issue loans.

Sustainable Development

Gwen now runs a shop in her village and is considered “famous.” Everyone knows her and comes to her shop to buy food and household goods – the only place they can get many products without traveling to a distant town. Gwen doesn’t sell charcoal at her shop. Instead she uses her extra income to plant trees – a decision she made along with friends in her savings group.

I am happy about this program. We used to be dependent, but now I’m confident about myself. I thank Five Talents who supported the managers to train us. I’m now self-employed and I’m respected by my husband and the community.
